A primer on the MFA maze
Article Abstract:
The Multi-Fibre Arangement (MFA) contains extremely complex and intentionally obscure provisions on the international trade of textiles and clothing. This obscurity has resulted in allocation inefficiency which is due to reallocations of production and inefficient production allocations among constrain ed and unconstrained trading countries. There is evidence that the MFA has limited the access of developing countries into the textile and clothing markets of the EC and the US.

Is there a special case for import protection for the textile and apparel sectors based on labour adjustment?
Article Abstract:
A study regarding import protection in the textile and apparel industry reveals that protection from imports is not an efficient method to help laid-off workers who encounter hardships due to lay-off. The percentage of laid-off apparel workers who find new jobs in other industries is higher than those who were laid-off from other industries. Laid-off workers from the apparel industry have more chances of finding higher-wage jobs.

The competitive position of Asian producers of textiles and clothing in the US market
Article Abstract:
The US textile industry is hard pressed by imports from places, especially Asian countries, in terms of competitive prices and greater fashion appeal. For example, cotton products from India, Pakistan and China and man-made fiber products from Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong are very popular in the US. Nevertheless, US producers enjoy the advantage in the market for fabrics intended for upholstery, carpets and denim.
