Vietnam in ASEAN: trade, investment and other economic effects
Article Abstract:
Vietnam's participation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will result in trade creation, which may come from reduction of intra-ASEAN tariff by Vietnam. Trade creation may occur when Vietnam shifts its imports from the expensive supplying countries of centrally-planned economies to countries of ASEAN-6. Vietnam's membership will have minimum effect on trade diversion. The original ASEAN-6 will derive benefits from investment opportunities in Vietnam. The widening of Vietnam's market will create possibilities for exploiting economies of scale.

The AFTA-CER dialogue
Article Abstract:
The negotiation for a tie-up between the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and the Australia-New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Agreement (CER) is bound to bring economic benefits to both regions. An AFTA-CER agreement would increase New Zealand and Australia's access to the Southeast Asian market. Two-way trade was estimated to reach $12.5 billion in 1996. Furthermore, it is expected to foster political goodwill and regional security.
