Actions versus prospects: the effect of problem representation on regret
Article Abstract:
Regret theory is not consistent with prospect-based theories of choice such as expected utility theory. Regret theory is based on the idea that the expectation of regret or rejoicing influences actions. The impact of problem representation on regret was studied by conducting two surveys in which subjects were asked to choose between a riskier lottery and a safer one. The research indicates that the validity of regret theory is overly dependent on a certain presentation format. Regret appears to occur only if the decision is presented in a manner that causes the decision maker to make comparisons.
