'Aggressive unilateralism' and Section 301: market opening or market closing?
Article Abstract:
Aggressive unilateralism has been the international export policy adopted by the US in an effort to emphasize its strategy of export promotion. A study of section 301 of the 1984 Trade Act is presented which attempts to explain the issue of possible trade retaliation. Retaliation has been imposed by the US eight times, with only one incident having resulted to counter-retaliation involving about $50 million in trade. In order to keenly assess section 301, a study should be made that will include its impact on US trade relations with other countries and to the GATT.

A transition proposal for Lome convention trade preferences: the case of the EU banana regime
Article Abstract:
A comparison between provisions of the Lome Convention, which has granted trade preferences to the ex-European colonies in Africa, Pacific area and the Caribbean region, and a proposed replacement banana regime of the Single European Market is presented. It is shown that the proposed replacement is even more protectionist. It is then suggested that a system using a unified tariff and producer aid be used for the sake of efficiency in satisfying trade preferences.
