Amartya K. Sen's contributions to the study of social welfare
Article Abstract:
The economist Amartya K. Sen's extensive analysis of social welfare has been one of his most valuable contributions to the fields of philosophy and economics. Sen's explorations on the subject are not only based on economics but also draw on conceptual, empirical and formal-mathematical areas as well. Moreover, his study of social welfare emphasized the measurement of inequality and poverty. What distinguishes Sen's work from other studies of economics is his combination of economic and philosophical reasoning as the bases for social policy formulation.
