An analysis of the war of attrition and the all-pay auction
Article Abstract:
The non-standard auction forms of the war of attrition and the all-pay auction both raise greater revenue than all sealed-bid auctions. In both nonstandard forms, all the losers pay their respective bids. They differ only in that the winner in the war of attrition pays the bid of the second-highest bidder, while the winner in the all-pay auction his actual bid.
