Article Abstract:
Northrup King Co. collaborated with Ciba Seeds to develop then market Bt corn technology with an eye towards potential profits to be reaped from the alliance. Northrup King director of product management Jack Bernens indicated that the alliance needed farmers to try the technology. Northrup King sought to improve the positioning of its conservative brand as a dominant seed technology provider. Ciba Seeds invested a whopping $3 million into the project at a time when it held just 3% of market share. Ciba Seeds corn product manager Dan Hinderliter noted that the company took a huge risk with that investment.
