Federal government initiatives and the foundations of the information technology revolution: lessons from history
Article Abstract:
The federal funding for computer-science research has helped provide ample support for the field for a number of decades. The emergence of the field of computer-science research suggests the adaptive nature of federal research support programs. However, as the government increasingly relies on commercial off-the-shelf technology, its influence as purchasers of desired technology is declining. The future of computer-science is uncertain as the industry relies more on innovations and leaders in the field are looking for new models to solve past problems.

Valuing the impact of large-scale ecological change in a market: the effect of climate change on U.S. timber
Article Abstract:
A dynamic ecological-economic model to study the effect of climate change on economic resources used US timber production data as a the resource basis and showed that incremental increases in global temperature is likely to increase US timber production. The model takes into account a number of ecological phenomena that occurs as global temperature increases, such as diebacks, and the response of the market to such resource deterioration or improvement.

Intellectual human capital and the birth of U.S. biotechnology enterprises
Article Abstract:
The development of the American biotechnology industry is studied. Results show that intellectual human capital was responsible for the growth and location of the industry. Intellectual human capital mainly came in the form of scientists who published their genetic-sequence discoveries in academic journals. The presence of universities in a particular location and federal support also contributed to the growth of the industry.
