Britain's Grenada Shut-Out
Article Abstract:
An account of the events leading up to the decision by American government leaders to invade Grenada is presented. British and American responses to the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States' (OECS) request for military aid are analyzed. Only approximately a dozen senior American officials were informed of the executive decision to send United States Marines to Grenada. It was decided that the British would not be consulted prior to the invasion because the secrecy of the operation might have been jeopardized. American leaders believed the British would support the invasion. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher vehemently opposed the American military action. Explanations of the Americans' failure to communicate to London officials the request for military help made by the British representative on Grenada are construed as a coverup for a serious diplomatic breach. The effect of the incident on Anglo-American relations is questioned.

Article Abstract:
The United Nations General Assembly voted for a resolution deploring the United States invasion of Grenada. It is plain that the Grenadan people asked for it and welcomed it. Caribbean states feared that Cuba would make the island a base for further encroachments on their territories.
