California's Enfeebled Faculties
Article Abstract:
Fund raising will be the top priority of the new head of the University of California, David Gardner. A deteriorating physical plant and noncompetitive faculty salaries are two major problems at the University of California at Berkeley campus. State government financial support of the university, which was cut under Governor Ronald Reagan, needs to be increased. The effects of budget cuts on the four year colleges and community colleges within the university system are described.

Is Segregation a Sin?
Article Abstract:
The United States Supreme Court has ruled that universities may discriminate on the basis of sex so long as it is not done in a federally funded program or discipline. Although the ruling has been construed as a civil rights victory for the administration, Congress may rewrite the debated law. There are few all-male universities, whereas there are over 100 all-women schools and several nearly all-black universities. Reasons for this continued segregation are briefly explored.

Magnetic Attraction
Article Abstract:
Bakersfield, California has agreed to use the magnet school concept to end racial integration. Under this concept, schools in predominantly minority areas are upgraded in fields such as science or music, in order to attract white children. Critics of magnet schools in New York City say they pull off the most talented children, but leave other schools segregated.
