Chemists Look for Bedfellows for Plastics
Article Abstract:
Chemical companies are searching for ways to produce stronger lightweight plastics, to compete with metals. They are focusing on polymer blends and alloys. One approach uses plastics as chemical glues to hold together fibers. The goal is a high ratio of fiber to plastics producing a material resistant to heat and readily molded. Contradictory requirements for the material are causing problems. Examples are given.

Getting Plastics from Silicon
Article Abstract:
Efforts by researchers at Britain's IC Industries, Inc. to develop silicon-based products are reviewed. The goal is to replace carbon-based polymers such as polyethylene as the standard for plastics. Vermiculite development has been rewarding including making it flexible and using it as a glass coating to upgrade thermal properties.

Double Vision
Article Abstract:
Du Pont's new process group-transfer polymerization (GTP) is considered. Du Pont claims energy savings and a lead to totally new plastics. Critics question whether or not it is new.
