Corporate Planning in South African Companies
Article Abstract:
A survey of corporate planning characteristics in South Africa, the United States and Great Britain is reported. A wide range of findings is reported for both publicly and privately owned industries. They are grouped in categories according to organizational maturity, growth rate, profitability, organizational form, planning approach, and planning expenditures. Figures as to the degree of participation in corporate planning of both internal and external groups are shown. It is shown that the chief executive officer (CEO) tends to work with his executives in some phases of planning and with shareholders and directors in other phases. Statistics are explained in great detail.

Planning for Job Creation
Article Abstract:
This is a study of a limited number of structure plans in Great Britain. A structure plan is written by a local, usually county, authority for social, economic and physical systems of an area for a twenty to thirty-year period. Several tables report the findings of the survey. Authorities generally expected a poor economy throughout the 1970s, but improvement in the 1980s. Employment problems in Great Britain are examined, problems often misunderstood by local authorities. Planners seem not to have learned from experience and rely on government policies that could be changed by a new government.

Contingency planning for emergencies
Article Abstract:
The contingency plans developed by Shell UK Exploration and Production to deal with emergencies on the country's offshore installations in the North Sea are described. Preventive measures such as good design and sound maintenance are the company's first line of defense. When an emergency arises, a cooordinator mobilizes all support units to contain the problem. Training and exercise are key parts of the emergency response mechanism as well as public affairs.
