Laxatives and antacids
Article Abstract:
The total UK retail market for antacids and laxatives is predicted to be worth 182 million pounds sterling by 2001. Some 17.5% of adults, who were questioned, used laxatives during 1996-1997, whilst 43.6% used stomach and indigestion preparations. Some 25,836 adults were surveyed. Sales of laxatives and antacids, in the UK, were worth 141 million pounds sterling in 1996 and are expected to rise to 147 million pounds sterling in 1997. Sales between 1992-97 are predicted to rise by 18%. Some 15.95 million pounds sterling was spent on marketing antacids and laxatives during 1996.

Cough and throat remedies

The market for over-the-counter cough and throat remedies is estimated to be worth 207 million pounds sterling in 1996, up from 199 million pounds in 1995. Cough remedies boast 36% of the market, sore throat remedies 11%, and medicated confectionery 53%. Sales of these products are influenced by influenza epidemics. Rates of coughs and colds have remained stable since 1992. Emphasising the preventative qualities of the products is a potential growth area.
