The US economy had started to slow down even before the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. It is now believed that real GDP has ben pushed into a fall of around 1.2% in the third quarter of 2001 and 1.7% in the fourth quarter. Retailers are preparing for poor sales in the pre-Christmas period.
