Cyclical productivity in a model of labor hoarding
Article Abstract:
The dynamic correlations of sectoral productivity with aggregate variables and the cyclical behavior of total factor productivity were explained through a labor hoarding model. The model presented convex costs of altering the labor force, prompting companies to adjust the intensity of labor utilization over the cycle. Cyclical differences in labor 'effort' occurred in response to anticipated changes in future industry conditions. The study was able to emphasize the information content of aggregate variables for the decisions in individual sectors about labor inputs.
