Dark spirits
Article Abstract:
A review of the UK market for dark spirits, including brandy, rum and whiskey, reveals that volume sales fell from 126.1 million liters in 1994 to an estimated 103.3 million litres in 1997. The market is generally mature. Producers are targeting the younger age groups, but the growing number of consumers over the age of 35 may offer hope if producers can persuade them to move from white spirits to dark spirits. Consolidation in the industry may affect brands, which are numerous. Major players, including merging companies Guinness PLC and Grand Metropolitan PLC, dominate the market.

Dark spirits
Article Abstract:
The UK market for dark spirits declined during the recession at the beginning of the 1990s and has never recovered. The growth sectors in alcohol are wine, white spirits and ready-to-drink mixes. However, sales of whisky, which has an 80% share of the dark spirit market, are equal in volume to sales of all white spirits. The main consumers of dark spirits are older drinkers, particularly males. All rum and brandy consumed in the UK is imported, but the export market for Scotch whisky is buoyant. The major producer of Scotch whisky is Bell's.
