Defining the profession
Article Abstract:
One of the American Economic Development Council's tasks is to come up with a comprehensive definition of the profession of economic development. In consonance with this function, the body created a task force to deal with such matters as education and eventual certification of those in the profession. Another important goal of the task force was to determine the kind and amount of knowledge and skills that every economic developer needs to have.

Article Abstract:
Economic development efforts deal with the creation of employment as well as other socially desirable goals. The latter is often overlooked but are as important as hiring and job creation. Economic wellbeing should be achieved alongside the attainment of a higher quality of life, respect for the environment and an increased sense of community among individuals and groups.
