Deindustrialisation and economic growth
Article Abstract:
The economic decline experienced by the UK was most noticeable during the 1950s and 1970s. However, a more optimistic assessment of the UK economy was given in the 1980s due to changes in the supply-side policy and apprehensions of its long-run implications. Studies in growth economics have shed light on what went wrong during the 1970s and the implications of what transpired in the 1980s. It was concluded that a limited reversal in the decline may have been due to the Thatcherite reforms in the 1980s. Deindustrialization has been found to be important in itself.

Controversy: economists, the welfare state and growth: the case of Sweden
Article Abstract:
Sweden has long been considered as an ideal Nordic model for the welfare state and has had one of the highest standards of living in the world. Thus, if the welfare state becomes a problem to Sweden, it will probably be more headache-inducing to other countries. The Economic Journal published four articles on this issue in its Nov. 1996 issue. The papers discuss whether the welfare state had caused Swedosclerosis, a local version of Eurosclerosis.

Controversy: Deindustrialisation and Britain's industrial performance since 1960
Article Abstract:
The UK was the most powerful economy in the world in 1890. However, its economy has declined over the century. This has been most apparent beginning 1960 when other European countries had overtaken the UK in terms of sustaining higher growth rates. The factors contributing to the poor industrial performance of the UK since 1960 are examined. Deindustrialization and the role of policy during UK's economic decline is given emphasis.
