Did we lose the war on poverty?
Article Abstract:
The standard of living in the US from the 1970s to the 1980s has improved. However, this has not been reflected in data provided by the Bureau of Census primarily because its measurement is based on median real family income. A better alternative would be to use consumption as the economic parameter. Information on this is gathered through the Consumer Expenditure Survey. By expanding the sample size of this survey, and by coupling the results with the National Income and Product Accounts, the country would have a more reliable measure of its success in battling poverty.
