Article Abstract:
The small business earnings (actual last three months) was analysed for the period January 1986 to December 2003. The report showed that earnings gains retreated in December after reaching the highest level since 2000 in November and those had lower earnings blamed weaker sales volume, higher labor and material costs and lower selling prices.

Languishing profit trends in January is reported with 17 percent reporting higher earnings, up one point while 43 percent reported weaker earnings, down one point. Sixty-one percent attributed improved earnings to stronger sales, three percent credited lower labor costs and 4 percent cited lower material costs.
