Economic development and income distribution in Japan: an assessment of the Kuznets hypothesis

Article Abstract:

Income inequality increased in Japan between the pre-war era and the period after the 1939 to 1945 war. There was a regressing distribution of income before the war, which ties in with the Kuznets hypothesis of worsening distribution at the start of econmic development. The increase in inequality in post-war Japan may be due to changes that occurred directly after the war rather than to economic growth. Kuznets sees equality as likely to increase as economic growth progresses. Policy measures appear to be needed to help promote equality.

Children, parental employment and educational attainment: an English case study

Article Abstract:

There has been a debate on time spent on child care in Britain during the 1990s, which has a greater focus on the needs of the child than previous debates on the sexual division of labor in the household. The issue of childcare has become a public concern. A local case study in England has focused on a relatively stable population, and has found that children's educational performance was best when mothers were in paid work, though the children did not perform as well if both parents had full-time employment.
