Egypt's minerals sector
Article Abstract:
Egypt has not privatized their mining industry, but has reorganized it to include the participation of four public sector holding companies. The goal is to increase exploitation of untapped mineral reserves including gold, talc, sulfur and potassium chloride. Egypt's mineral imports total $372.3 million, offset by only $170.3 million in exports in 1991. Egypt hopes to expand exploration for gas and oil, having signed 40 contracts with 13 foreign firms. The government plans to convert domestic consumption from oil to gas to make more crude available for export.
