European Community law and the self-regulatory capacity of society
Article Abstract:
The obligations placed on governments to legislate to implement European Community (EC) social directives aimed at harmonizing national laws are counter to the belief that society should regulate itself whenever possible. The extension of EC legislation to cover such areas as consumer and worker protection further impinges on areas previously governed by self-regulation. Were the EC to lay down only a basic norm for harmonization, rather than prescribing detailed obligations in its directives, European harmonization could be achieved through self-regulation.

The European parliament's new committees of inquiry: tiger or paper tiger?
Article Abstract:
The establishment of the Committees on Inquiry in the European Parliament is aimed at setting up temporary committees which will investigate alleged maladministration in the implementation of the European Union's laws. The committees are also entrusted to examine the community's transit systems and other related considerations. Thus, the Committees on Inquiry have the power to scrutinize inappropriate and inadequate EU policies which may adversely affect the regional economic relations of the member countries of the EU.

The reformation of European constitutionalism
Article Abstract:
Constitutionalism is important to the European Community because it enables a discrimination to be made between systems that go beyond national territories and the Community. The effect of constitutionalism is intense and cannot be avoided. It imposes conditions upon the workings of governance and is the operating system within which all of the Community's economic, political and social efforts will or will not function.
