Executive briefing
Article Abstract:
Regulations affecting economics policies have been promulgated in several Middle East countries. Kuwait passed a new industry law abolishing its old industrial authority structures while establishing an independent body, the Industrial Authority. The United Arab Emirates, meanwhile, passed new and more stringent regulations on immigrant workers. Oman also passed regulations on the registration of accountants as had the UAE. In the meantime, the US has urged Saudi Arabia to curb its spending and to liberalize its economy. The International Finance Corporation is now more involved in the region.

Gaza: the closure
Article Abstract:
Israel's closure of the Palestinian territories after four suicide bomb attacks in Feb. and Mar. 1996 has resulted in a virtual halt in trade in Gaza and the West Bank. The closure has been economically devastating for Gaza. Agricultural losses has been estimated by the UN at $600,000 to $700,000 a day mostly from citrus, tomatoes, potatoes and strawberries. Gaza's problem has been brought about by local monopolies and the corrupt individuals close to Arafat.
