UK economic growth is expected to continue to exceed 3% with the US economy expected to grow by more than 3%., with a modest rise in Germany and France. Inflation in the UK is expected to be more subdued later in 1997 and early 1998 and Labour plans to adhere to the tight public spending plans announced in the last Budget. European monetary union is forecast to proceed on time, although Italy is not expected to be in the first batch of members, or the UK due to lack of strong political commitment and economic problems.

A Cheer and a Half for Democracy
Article Abstract:
Turgut Ozal was elected prime minister of Turkey. The general elections were partly democratic and the new regime is partly civilian. President Kenan Evren is head of Turkey's ruling military council. Ozal was not expected to win the election. He now faces a difficult relationship with the military rulers. Martial law may be lifted in some provinces. Ozal's position in parliament should be secure.
