Fiscal Policy in Australia and Southeast Asia: An Overview
Article Abstract:
Several articles in this journal examine the consequences of fiscal reform designed to reduce the Australian national budget deficit, a program known as the Charter of Budget Honesty. Nilss Olekalns feels strong fiscal controls will have little substantive effect on aggregate demand. John Ablett believes there is sufficient evidence to prove the Howard Government's policies achieve generational balance. Malcolm Dowling suggests the 1997 Southeast Asian economic crisis might have been avoided or lessened with stronger fiscal policies that produced high rates of economic growth.
