Follow the leader: theory and evidence on political participation
Article Abstract:
An analysis of state-by-state voting data for the 11 US presidential elections from 1948 to 1988 reveals that the participation rate increases with predicted closeness and electoral votes and decreases with the size of the voting population. These results can be explained by a follow-the-leader model of political participation. The model, which emphasizes on efforts of political leaders to influence both state and national election and on how voters respond to these efforts, is validated by structural estimation.

Verifying the solution from a nonlinear solver: a case study - comment
Article Abstract:
A replication experiment is presented with the main characters being operating systems, Hessians, scaling, double-peaked likelihoods, and the limits of PC computing. Two important points are implied which include the need to verify the solution of a nonlinear estimation procedure and the need to reform the replication policy.
