The UK market for frozen desserts was worth an estimated 283 million pounds sterling in 1999, up 3% from 1998. However, the volume market has fallen from 83,000 t in 1998 to 82,000 t in 1999. Sara Lee is the leading frozen desserts brand with an estimated 22% share in 1999, followed by McVitie's with 9.9% and RHM with 7.1%. Hot eating desserts are one of the sector's success stories, with sales growing by more than 41% since 1995, reaching an estimated 48 million pounds sterling and accounting for a 17% share of the sector. The UK frozen desserts market is forecast to reach 352 million pounds sterling, at current prices, by 2004.

The frozen dessert market should grow 10% by value to 277 million pounds sterling in 1999 from 253 million pounds sterling in 1995. Market value is expected to reach 295 million pounds sterling by 2002. The largest frozen dessert sector is gateaux and luxury desserts which account for 40% of the 1997 market, valued at 107 million pounds sterling. Hot eating desserts were valued at 40 million pounds sterling in 1997, helped by the increase in ownership of microwave ovens.
