Garst executes triple play of promotions, hopes to hit home run

Slater, IA-based Garst Seed Co has launched three public relations (PR) programs in summer 1999 in hopes of boosting its market share and the image of its brands. The three PR initiatives have some type of connection to sports. The first is a corn maze that was launched in Jul 31, 1999 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the baseball movie 'Field of Dreams.' The second inovlves motor racing and a 1995 Ford Mustang to promote the seeds and Web sites of Garst and its sister company AgriPro Seeds Inc. The third is a wagon train marathon that was sponsored by Garst to coincide with the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the California Gold Rush.

DTN on air brings talk radio to visual life

DTN/Farm-Dayta, a radio deliverer of agricultural markets, weather and news based in Omaha, NE, will broadcast a one-hour innovative format called DTN On Air, a weekly radio program with content geared toward agriculture that lies between a talk radio and Larry King on television. The program is hosted by Bryce Anderson who also acts as the chief meteorologist. The program also provides public affairs programming for DTN. The system serves as a receiver with live audio through DTN's own proprietary closed system and satellite technology. The audio is either originated in DTN's studio, at a remote studio or via telephone.

Illinos' AgriLand: creating a niche in livestock grazing, cotton

Farm Progress Cos has been successfully running the AgriLand Expo since taking it over from the state of Illinois. AgriLand Expo is held three days the week before Labor Day in DuQuoin, IL., to show farmers the latest trends in cattle grazing and cotton farming. The number of exhibitors ballooned to 225 in 1997 from the 26 exhibitors in the last year that the state handled the show.
