Jordan: privatization effort falters as telecom sale suspended
Article Abstract:
Jordanian government's initiative to privatize Jordan Telecommunications Corp suffered another set back when Southern Bell Corp (SBC) withdrew from 40% equity stake bid in Oct 1998. The government suspended the sale as a result of SBC's withdrawal, leaving the other bidder, British Cable and Wireless, without a tender. Speculations suggest that SBC withdrew because of an unfavorable international investment climate and certain terms imposed on the deal.

Jordan: JTC privatization
Article Abstract:
The Jordanian Cabinet voted on Aug 18, 1998 to push through with JTC's privatization. In early August 1998, the company's board chairman, Ali Shukri, challenged the sale, stating that it is not necessary to divest the shares to a foreign company. He added that the country already possessed sufficient current telecommunications technology, and that he favored local investors be given the priority in acquiring the company's shares.
