Geography, demography and economic growth in Africa
Article Abstract:
Africa is home to some of the poorest countries in the world. Possible reasons why most of the countries in the region is poor lies mainly in the geographic factor. The geographic location of the continent itself, offers no opportunity for cross-cultural interaction. Demographic data shows that the small temperate zones at the north and south have higher incomes than their tropical core counterparts. No definite correlation exists between physical climate and economic climate, but trends are beginning to establish its possibility.

A study on the effects of the Dec. 1994 Mexican peso crises on emerging markets presented during the Brookings Panel on Economic Activity held from Mar. 28 to 29, 1996 is discussed. It is shown that countries with overvalued real exchange rates, lending booms and low foreign exchange reserves were the most vulnerable to financial crisis, and deeply felt the effects of the Mexican peso crises.
