German unification and the 'market adoption' hypothesis
Article Abstract:
Analyses of the rapid drop in the economic well being of East Germany after unification need to realize the special situation of the German unification, particularly the transfer of Eastern resources. A cost-benefit analysis factoring in the loss or transfer of eastern Germany's productive assets, forest lands, real assets, emigration of skilled labor as well as scrapping of a sizeable portion of human capital engaged in research and development is presented. Liquidation of these assets will inhibit eastern Germany's recovering historical losses relative to western Germany.
