Germany
Article Abstract:
The German economy has recovered strongly from recession in 1994, and should continue to recover in 1995 boosted by Germany's export performance and increases in business investment. Consumer spending is expected to be weak during 1995. Gross domestic product will rise above 1980s levels and return to 1970s levels, with a pause during 1996 to 1997 with the end of increased stockbuilding. Unit labor costs are falling and inflation is forecast at under 2.5% in the medium term. Germany's fiscal position and current account should improve. Economic growth will be faster in eastern Germany.

Article Abstract:
European economies were enjoying an economic recovery in late 1997, and this recovery is likely to continue in 1998. The German economy is being boosted by exports, helped by a lower value for the German mark. Germany business sentiment is positive and growth should increase a little in 1998. Unemployment is high. but inflation is low. Meanwhile, French demand is increasing and the prospects for 1998 are encouraging, though there will be pressure on the budget deficit. Italy's deficit has dropped sharply, and such a fall may not be sustainable.
