Help wanted: economists, crime and public policy
Article Abstract:
The increasing crime rate necessitates formation of a policy making-body of economists with quantitative and modelling skills to solve pending cases and provide analytical answers to criminal justice questions. An optimal crime control policy needs to have an effective sentencing system. Gary S. Becker's model of crime and punishment and its refined versions explain that an appropriate punishment method involves strict penalties. George A. Akerlof and Janet Yellen's model is a useful aid in analyzing criminal behavior.

Going for the gold: economists as expert witnesses
Article Abstract:
Economists are increasingly sought after as expert witnesses and analysts, and this has led to a legalization of much of the profession, and a move away from seeking truth toward adversarial relationships. There are limits on such activity in many professions, though it is not clear how they could be enforced or whether they are desirable Some standards should be used for expert witnesses, such as an obligation to be truthful and to disclose to whom consulting services have been provided.

Economists and the media
Article Abstract:
Extensive media exposure of economists as political consultants affects the credibility of people in the profession. While open communications is important for dissemination of relevant economic policies to the public, the focus away from the scholarly side of economics becomes a matter of concern. Economists that are used to being under public scrutiny tend towards diplomacy, sidestepping real issues that contradict the goals of politicians.
