The UK market for household paper products is set to increase by 5% per year in value to 1,231 million pounds sterling to 2001 from 1,025 million pounds sterling in 1997. The market is likely to have expanded 7% by value in real terms and 11% by volume during 1992-97. The market is dominated by own-label products, but premium products are perceived by most producers to have the best growth potential. Over 99% of households already purchase household tissues which limits potential for natural growth.

Household linen

The British are purchasing less linen because of fewer house sales during the first half of the 1990's. Total sales figures for 1995 are valued at 925 million pounds sterling, a drop of 7% since 1991. Linen is no longer purchased as frequently as a gift. More young people reside with their parents because of economic pressures, and postpone linen purchases. Marks and Spencer PLC are achieving an increasing share in the market through catalogue sales.
