Houseplants and cut flowers

Sales of houseplants in the UK are predicted to be worth 359 million pounds sterling by 2001 and sales of cut flowers are predicted to reach 1,135 million pounds sterling. Some 34% of those questioned purchased houseplants as a present, whilst around 23% of cut flower purchases were unplanned. Some 1,009 adults were questioned. Florists retained a 45% share of the retail market for cut flowers in 1995, with houseplants sold mainly from garden centres and supermarkets. The combined UK market for houseplants and cut flowers was worth 1,200 million pounds sterling in 1996.

The UK market for houseplants and cut flowers is forecast to reach 1.16 billion pounds sterling in 1995. The market is dominated by cut flowers, with a 71% value share and sales estimated at 829 million pounds sterling in 1995, compared to houseplants with sales of 327 million pounds sterling. Most products in the category are imported, mainly from the Netherlands and Colombia. It is expected that the market for houseplants and cut flowers will reach around 1.3 billion pounds sterling by 1999.
