How work effort responds to wage taxation: a non-linear versus a linear tax experiment
Article Abstract:
The projections of a labor supply model which assumes a single-period, single-person utility optimization is examined. Utility is further presumed to be a quasi-concave function of consumption and leisure. The specific issue studied was how employees calibrate their work effort in reaction to gross wage change in a non-linear tax system compared to a linear tax system. This study has significant implications for tax flattening. It is suggested that tax flattening will result in greater labor and tax revenues when wage rates increase.
