Inflation expectations in manufacturing industry
Article Abstract:
The approach for inferring price expectations from business survey data and how it is applied to CBI price expectations data, is described. It looks at the form business survey data takes and how such surveys can be interpreted. It then offers an alternative approach using the measurement equation to quantify data on expectations from the survey. This is adjusted to take account of biases that over-estimate or under-estimate the growth of the particularly variable.

Will the strength of sterling slow growth?
Article Abstract:
Pound sterling has risen in value by 26% from Aug 1996 to Mar 1998, and this is partly, but not entirely, explained by high United Kingdom interest rates. UK interest rates are higher than those of other developed economies, but European monetary union also appears to be playing a role in the strength of sterling. The rise in the pound's value appears to be slowing UK economic growth, and exporters are likely to reduce exports in volume terms in 1st qtr 1998.

Are the official estimates of productivity growth giving the MPC misleading signals?
Article Abstract:
Economic estimates suggest that manufacturing growth has slowed down while average wages have increased. However, is is likely that the rate of productivity has been underestimated and new estimates indicate that the rate is consistent with the increase in earnings. Closer analysis suggests that the service sector may be more to blame than the manufacturing sector. These inaccurate economic statistics have had a significant impact on economic policy.
