The value of weather information services for nineteenth-century Great Lakes shipping
Article Abstract:
A study of the value of government-provided weather information on the history of Great Lakes shipping was conducted. The objective was to obtain credible evidence of the high rate of return from the creation of weather information by the federal government. Data were obtained from the Chicago Board of Trade statistics on weekly shipping rates and monthly shipping levels of grain from Chicago to Buffalo. Results indicate that the storm-warning service during the 1870s and 1880s offers valuable information to shippers.
