The first International Institute of Forecasters workshop on "Nonlinearities, business cycles and forecasting" was convened in Madrid on 12 &13 December, 2003. The recent developments that rendered the business cycle complex have engendered a renewed interest in the examination of the cycle.

The converging tendency of the business cycle in six poorest regions of United States is investigated. Kalman filter, signal extraction, unobserved components, etc. are examined.

Article Abstract:
It is suggested that analysis of growth and convergence should be done using unobserved components. The personal convictions pertaining to convergence of cycles is presented.
