Article Abstract:
There is diversity in land inheritance rules among different societies and cultures. A general theory of land inheritance rules is developed to show that the primary benefit of a fixed inheritance rule prevents wasteful competition among the potential heirs. The effect of well-functioning land market on the choice of inheritance rules is also examined.
