Small and new, but nonetheless competent: Austria and the EU presidency
Article Abstract:
Austria's appointment as head of the European Monetary Union (EMU) has drawn the interest of political critics and policy scientists. With its rather limited exposure and knowledge on various European Union activities, Austria seems an unlikely choice for EMU leadership. Experts, however, believe that the Austrian government is highly capable of addressing and resolving the needs of the organization. Some even believe that Austria would be instrumental in spreading long-term economic development in all parts of Europe.

Legal developments
Article Abstract:
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) and the Court of First Instance have done a splendid job of overseeing the welfare of their member states. Although these two legal entities were not confronted with sensational cases in 1998, they have consistently watched over the rights and legal privileges of European Union members. ECJ has decided to impose more stringent provisions for the Grant legislation in an effort to address the growing concern over discrimination issues.
