Less a Flow, More a Flood
Article Abstract:
Forecasters are attempting to predict what will happen to the American dollar. Newly published data helps explain why the dollar rose in 1983, despite a growing American trade deficit. A study of capital flows shows that American banks were lending money in the first quarter of 1983, but by the second quarter had begun importing capital. Analysts predict that an increase in American investment abroad will push the dollar downward. Non- American demand for dollars will probably not offset this trend.
