Luggage and handbags
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom retail market for luggage, handbags and briefcases expanded by 5% during 1991-96, or fell 15% by value in real terms. Sales of luggage are highly dependent on the holiday market, with the luggage market likely to benefit from the 17% increase in the number of holidays taken by UK residents in 1996 compared with 1990. Consumers generally select luggage purchases according to features rather than brand names, with practicality perceived as more important than colour or appearance. Manufacturers do not invest heavily in advertising, which could be the reason for low brand awareness.
