The survey details of the National Federation of Independent Business on Small Business Economic Trends which shows the optimism index is 1.6 points higher than August, job creation in the market, capital spending and inventories are discussed. The monthly trends of various issues like earnings, sales, prices, employment, inventories and credit conditions from 1999 to 2004 are illustrated. The questionnaire used for the survey is also presented.

The worst performance by profit trends is reported with 13 percent reporting higher earnings, down four points while 49 percent reported weaker earnings, up six points. Sixty-three percent attributed improved earnings to stronger sales, three percent credited lower labor costs and 4 percent cited lower material costs.
