The UK market for make-up and colour cosmetics (including face make-up, nail make-up, eye make-up and lip make-up) reached 497 million pounds sterling in 1993, up 14% from 1989. The market in 1994 is forecast to reach 516 million pounds sterling. The largest sector is face make-up, with a 37% share, followed by eye make-up with a 28% share. The total make-up market is dominated by four makers: Boots, with a 17% brand share, followed by Unilever, Avon and Procter & Gamble. The make-up market is forecast to reach 532.6 million pounds sterling by 1998.

The United Kingdom market for men's toiletries is expected to have grown to 460 million pounds in 1994 following a 28% rise in sales to 429 million pounds sterling in 1993 over 1989. Men's fragrances accounted for about 52% of sales in 1994, while sales of bodysprays increased to around 58 million pounds sterling in 1994. Men have become more aware of personal hygiene and are increasingly willing to buy their own grooming products. Chemists accounted for about 43% of sales in 1994 and are the main retail outlet.
