Making hay while the sun shines
Article Abstract:
An examination of ferry prices between 1986 and 1994 shows that prices rose steadily in the run-up to the opening of commercial freight and passenger operations through the Channel Tunnel. During the same period, increased prices coupled with higher traffic led to improved profitability for the ferry companies operating across the English Channel. Analysis suggests that these companies 'made hay' in anticipation of significant new competition from the Channel Tunnel, a phenomenon that can be explained by the impact of regulation on ferry prices and the collusive actions of ferry companies.
