Marriage and trust: some lessons from economics
Article Abstract:
Marriage can allow partners to invest over the long term in a relationship, but the trust needed to do this has tended to be undermined by no-fault divorce. Divorced wives should find that their financial position improves as a result of changes in the law. This could mean that men become more reluctant to invest in the marriage, and could allow women to take a more opportunistic attitude to marriage. Opportunism can be deterred by re-introducing fault in divorces, and this can bring greater parity between the sexes. Louisiana has introduced covenant marriage, which couples can select as an option, and this shows that it is practical to go back to the concept of fault.

The genesis of 'positive economics' and the rejection of monopolistic competition theory: a methodological debate
Article Abstract:
Milton Friedman used falsificationist methodology to reject monopolistic competition theory in 'The Methodology of Positive Economics', an article written in 1953. Falsificationism was established as the dominant research methodology for academic economists. There are contradictions between Friedman's presentation of economic practice and his views of methodology in this article. His favoring of perfect competition theory above monopolistic competition theory can also be criticised. He was concerned to establish economics as a scientific discipline.
