More monitoring can induce less effort
Article Abstract:
A greater amount of monitoring may paradoxically result in lesser effort by the objects of the monitoring activity. Furthermore, in the case of business organizations, the monitoring activity can be effectively assigned to staff who lack information about the people they are to monitor. The validity of these surprising assumptions can be seen in the efforts exerted by employees to impress a new manager who does not personally know them or their skills.
