Ownership structure and firm performance: some empirical evidence from Spain
Article Abstract:
The relationship between firm ownership structure and firm performance is examined by comparing the conduct and performance of family- and non-family-controlled businesses in Spain. The 'managerial' and the 'contractual' theories of the firm are tested using data from a sample of 81 firms listed on the Spanish stock market. Results provide support for the contractual theory, which holds that select a ownership structure that maximizes economic value, net of contractual costs.
